A bike for two
Would you like to explore the area by bicycle, but find cycling independently difficult? Then Grandma's Bicycle is the ideal solution! On this side-by-side tandem, you sit comfortably next to each other – much more stable and easier than a traditional tandem. Pedal together, enjoy the surroundings and stop for coffee along the way: cycling becomes a treat for everyone.
How the duo bike works
On the duo bike (also known as the 'Granny Bike'), you sit next to each other, which is much more comfortable and stable than a tandem. The driver can change gears (8 speeds), pedal, brake and steer. The passenger chooses whether to pedal and at what pace. In addition to the hand brakes, the bicycle also has a parking brake, so that both riders can dismount safely without the bicycle rolling away.
Please note: this bicycle can only be rented if the passenger is unable to cycle independently.
How does the duo bike work?
You sit on bucket seats that can be moved forwards and backwards, so that you can both reach the pedals easily. The passenger seat can be rotated to make it easier to get on (from a wheelchair, for example). You can also fold the armrests up and down, and the seat has a seatbelt. There is a basket at the rear and you can attach a walking stick to the frame if necessary.
The bicycle is just over 1 metre wide. That width takes some getting used to, but it fits perfectly on the cycle path. Make sure you keep the front wheel in the middle of the cycle path, and you'll be safe on the road!
Stair climbing assistance with electric motor
This side-by-side tandem has pedal assistance with an electric motor and 8 gears. This makes it easy for anyone to use, even if you both have less strength in your legs. If you want to start from a standstill or cross a small bridge in Delft, you can press a button on the handlebar controls to temporarily provide some extra assistance. You can see that these bridges are easy to cross in the video below, which was made by an enthusiastic tandem cyclist when there was not even pedal assistance yet!
Reservations
Click on the desired date and start time below. By default, four hours are blocked, but if you want to cycle for a shorter or longer period, you can adjust this in the next step of the reservation. The rental price is €10 per four-hour period (regardless of the time) and a €20 deposit. You pay this in our campsite shop on the day of rental.
